ASL Sermons on DVD Program
During the 2008 Western Deaf Camp Meeting in Milo, Oregon, Pastor Trexler and Chairperson Bruce Buzzell gave a presentation on what ADM has been doing. During this meeting, Pastor Trexler announced a new program “ASL Sermons on DVD.” Then each family received a sample of a sermon on DVD.
“ASL Sermons on DVD” is like a subscription program. One DVD will be sent each month. The sermons will be by different speakers and about different topics.
Beginning October, 2008, we will send DVDs to Deaf members who do not have a pastor or leader for the Deaf. We will only send DVDs to those Deaf who ask for them.
Deaf members can use these DVDs in their Deaf group at church, if they would like. Or, they could invite other Deaf to their home to watch the sermon.
Many of our Deaf members are isolated Deaf members. This means that these members live in areas where there is not a pastor or leader for the Deaf. They do not have the benefit of having a weekly sermon. Some have interpreters, but most Deaf feel that an interpreted sermon is not the same as a sermon in ASL. But some churches do not even have interpreters.
Many of you may remember the Video Lending Library at Christian Record Services (CRS).Years ago, when CRS had a Deaf Division, they had a special lending library with a long list of available sermons on VHS. A Deaf person could send in a form requesting certain VHS titles and would borrow them from CRS. Today, the lending library idea is not cost effective or practical because of postage and handling of DVDs.
So, instead of Deaf people borrowing DVDs, they can receive them as a subscription and keep the DVDs for needed use. They will not need to send the DVDs back.
This program is free for those who are Deaf and do not have a pastor or local leader to give a sermon. The North American Division has given some money to provide these. If they continue their sponsorship, then the DVDs will continue to be free.
We hope in the near future we will have additional workers so we can send two DVDs a month. For now, we can only send one DVD a month.
Please note that the DVDs are simple and are not heavily edited.
Each DVD will have one sermon. Speakers include: Pastor Paul Kelly, Pastor Jeff Jordan, Pastor Alfred Griffith, Pastor David Trexler, Elder George Belser, and Jim Hovey. Some of these DVDs will be from various camp meetings, while others are from the speaker’s local churches.
